Falco enters Brugar on a special day. Unfortunately, some disturbing news reaches the city as well. News that is especially disturbing for Maud.

And we go back a while to see what happened to that other group that ran away from the Battle of Orcfang Peak...

Pumori belongs to kanyiko
All the others belong to me.

I would also like to add that Kanyiko made a few helpful suggestions for this one. Thank you, Kanyiko.

Previous chapter: Falco's Reign - Part 65From the diary of Duke Duncan Bhaltair
July 4 1304 AoR: Argyle has given me a total of six companies to join the siege of Brugar. It’s still a rather limited number of men, compared to the 5000 ‘traitor militia’ and the 5000 Erin warriors that are already there, but my brother considers it sufficient to stake a claim on at least part of the city once the war is over. We’ll see, I guess.
July 13 1304 AoR: Argyle may have been more right than he thought. 10000 men may sound impressive, until you realize most of them are militia of questionable quality. This is particularly so for the ‘traitor troops’ of Sorenson and Linson. I bet only about a thousand of them are of regular army quality, more precisely the retinues of Baron Linson and Sorenson’s oldest son, who leads his father’s contingent. I was however surprised to see that the same goes for the Erin warriors. At least half of them are soldiers from Erin lords and not regular troops at a

Next chapter: Falco's Reign - Part 67Kian woke up with a start. At first, he couldn’t remember where he was, but then, the reality hit him hard. He had always found that the most annoying part of traveling was not sleeping in one’s own bed but not in his worst nightmares, he had ever imagined that he would be able to sleep in a dirty dank muddy hole. His body felt stiff and ached. He cautiously flexed his limbs and stood up. To his surprise, he saw a dark sky and stars through the grate above him. It was still night.
For the first time since his capture, he didn’t feel completely paralyzed by an all engulfing fear, so he decided to check out his prison. There wasn’t much to investigate. It was a roughly circular space, about two meters in diameter with earth walls and mud and water on the bottom. He walked to the other side. He noticed the bottom of the pit was a bit uneven. On his side, the water was just a thin layer, causing a muddy, smelly muck. On the other side, he stood ankle deep in filthy

So the nature of the prince's capture has been revealed.  I'm surprised that it was only orcs!  I thought that the vampires were behind it.  Although, with Erin defeated, the capture of the prince makes little sense as Maud could have done little to serve the vampires even if she had succeeded in getting away.

As it is, it looks like Kian and Falco will have something in common?

The orcs did well, as those warrior women were dangerous opponents to have been annihilated so badly by a raiding party.  But your orcs are pretty tough and dangerous, these certainly were.  And I'm not sure how large the orc raiding party was?

The lesson here is, don't divide your attention by sniping with your allies!  Even if one's alliance is fraying, and enemies not far behind, the environment itself might spawn enemies at any time.

The speech of the orcs is always interesting, as you give them fairly sophisticated vocabularies and syntax on one hand, but they can be almost comically ignorant on the other.  But, THEY don't sound benighted to their own ears, so it makes sense if one thinks about it that way.  They may comical in some ways, but they maintain a deadly seriousness of their own, and orcs and turning other races into meat via 'cannibalism' is never far away.

There is little chance of escaping in a melodramatic way (or just plain desperate sneaking) from an orc village.  The wargs and good orc trackers are powerful reasons, but the greatest is that few prisoners might survive the orc feast that will occur hours after a successful raid.

On lighter matters, Falco is now 17!  The plight of Kian makes a good bookend for the older Falco and how far he's come in a short period of time.  Falco was embarrassed at the announcement, he possibly would have preferred not to remind everyone how young he still is.  On the other hand, he's not 'sweet 16' anymore.  Certainly by medieval standards, he's a man.  This birthday immediately following the liberation of Brugar (which had a big hand in liberating itself) made for an important statement.

Also, the 2,000 extra troops have arrived.  They got there really fast, considering that Falco has had quick successes and hasn't dawdled at all?  Still, I think that Falco will need them--and might well wish that he had the additional 2,000 men and 50 knights!

On that subject, I wonder where the 5,000 Erin soldiers marched to?  Presumably back to Erin, avoiding Falco's army?

Falco might well have absorbed a few deserters, and maybe units of his betrayer barons?

It seems that those two barons had quite a lot of troops for being just barons?  Although militia and worse--conscripted levees--are hardly true soldiers, something Duncan alluded to in his diary.

Pumori is amusing as usual.  Sounds like there is something mysterious or tragic brewing for her?  She may yet play a big role in saving Kian--but there is a big hurdle to overcome first.  Argyle himself may yet make Falco's easy time come to a screeching end? :O

Likewise, the orcs (and their wargs) may give Pumori and her wolf friends a nasty double-take as well?  They may need every bit of guerrilla and archery technique they've learned to overcome these orcs?  I'm not forgetting that the orc raiding party defeated twenty elite warriors and acted almost like it was easy.
